SHAPE MEMORY PROPERTIES ON POLYMERIC SUBSTRATES WITH POTENTIAL FUTURE APPLICATIONS IN SELF-HEALING SYSTEMS

Self-healing properties in materials are enormously attractive from the industrial viewpoint. Ionomers are molecules that exhibit this self-healing phenomenon. Additionally, it is well known that shape memory polymers can play an important role in self-repairing. In this work, shape memory systems based on polycyclooctene/ionomer mixtures were performed; thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated by means of Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA). The shape memory behaviour of the samples was evaluated by Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA). This work serves as starting point for future self-healing studies.

APPLICATIONS OF SHAPE MEMORY CERAMICS TO OPTIMIZE HOME APPLIANCES

The Shape Memory Effect (SME) is a transformation phenomenon that allows the material return to its original form, shape or size, when subjected to a memorization process between two transformation phases, which is temperature or magnetic field dependent. Since SME was discover, the demand for Shape Memory Materials (SMMs) has been increased due to their ability to react directly to environmental stimuli and the opportunity of develop more functional systems while reducing the size and mechanical complexity. There are various types of shape memory materials and the most known are: shape memory alloy (SMA), shape memory ceramic (SMC) and shape memory polymer (SMP). These materials differ in a wide range of characteristics, as operating and transformations temperatures, strain, stress, and operating frequency. The work aims to review and evaluate the integrations of Shape Memory Ceramics in specific applications in the area of home-appliance. Furthermore, computer simulations of the select materials are going to be performed in order to evaluate their potential use for those applications.
