Great success of the "Sustainable Materials for Energy Production” workshop

In August, the "Sustainable Materials for Energy Production" workshop took place in Mexico during the 32nd International Materials Research Congress (IMRC). It was organized by the Mexican Society of Materials (SMMater) and the European Material Research Society (E-MRS), with the support of BCMaterials, among other entities. The event brought together more than 480 participants for three days, who attended a very interesting program with 11 guest speakers, 21 oral presentations and 10 short talks.

The meeting brought together important researchers and industrial experts from around the world to explore the latest advances in materials science focused on the sustainability of materials to achieve high efficiency of energy production.

The workshop was divided into three theme parts, one per day. On the first day, the focus was on 'New sustainable materials and processes driven by artificial intelligence for energy applications'. The session included a presentation by BCMaterials researcher and main organizer of the workshop, Daniel Salazar, who gave a talk entitled ‘Towards Clean Energy: Sustainable Materials by Design’.

On the second day, the presentations were given under the theme ‘Improving efficiency and recycling materials in current energy applications’. The workshop closed its sessions, dedicating the third day to cooperation networks between academic and research centers and industry based on the opportunities created by the energy transition, including a panel discussion with experts from different energy sectors.

The attendance success joined to an important list of participant experts. So as to highlight only some of them, Thomas Lograsso, Director of the Center for Innovation in Critical Materials of the United States Department of Energy; Thomas Schrefl from Danube University Krems (Austria); Alejandro Pérez from IREC (Spain); and prominent Mexican researchers and engineers such as Carlos Gaytán from PROLEC-GE, Leopoldo Vilchis, Director of Architectural Coatings at PPG; Hailin Hu from the Institute of Renewable Energy at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM); and Ana Karina Cuentas Gallegos, also from UNAM.

Due to the success of this event, the organizers are preparing the second edition of the workshop to be held during the next E-MRS spring meeting in Strasbourg, France, in 2025.
