Women and Girls in Science Week at BCMaterials

BCMaterials participated in the celebration of the International Week of Women and Girls in Science, which took place from February 10 to 16, by organizing several activities both inside and outside our center. On the 11th and 12th, we welcomed over 130 secondary school students from five educational institutions in Bizkaia: Zubi Zaharra Ikastola, IES Juan Antonio Zunzunegui, Ander Deuna Ikastola, IES Muskiz, and IES Sopela. During their visit, the students learned about the research conducted by BCMaterials scientists in the field of materials science, with applications in health, energy generation and storage, environmental monitoring and remediation, and the development of new devices.

Throughout the visits, students engaged in experiments and toured BCMaterials laboratories, including those focused on chemical synthesis, advanced manufacturing, thin films, biotechnology, optics, and electronics. The goal of these sessions was to connect students with female scientists, inspiring them to pursue or continue their studies in science.

Activities within the Framework of Emakumeak Zientzian

In addition to the center visits, BCMaterials participated in a series of talks organized by the Emakumeak Zientzian initiative, titled "Women Scientists of Yesterday and Today." Maibelín Rosales, a Marie Curie post-doctoral researcher at BCMaterials, was one of the speakers at a talk held in Bilbao. Rosales shared her research journey with an audience of around one hundred attendees and introduced one of her role models, Rania Hamza from the University of Toronto (Canada).

Moreover, BCMaterials has played a key role as one of the coordinating entities for the Emakumeak Zientzian initiative, which unites 35 organizations in the fields of science and technology across the Basque Country, including universities, research centers, and companies. The slogan for the Emakumeak Zientzian 2025 campaign is "Sow the Seed," highlighting the importance of small, daily actions that contribute to greater gender equality in science and technology.
